Kid Friendly Friday - Early Reading

Is it Friday already?!?!

Our middle child is such a character. She picks things up pretty quickly. When big sister learned how to read this year she wanted to as well. I started using the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann We don't do more than a couple of lessons a week but she is picking it up and retaining it. She knows several sounds and can sound out a few words. The lessons are very structured and easy to use. Sometimes she doesn't want to sit for an entire lesson - which I have told her in advance is OK. I give her little certificates about every 5 lessons. She loves the accomplishment.

So why do I want my 3 year old to read? She is not the social butterfly that her older sister is. She struggles in social situations so unless she knows you she will not do well around you. She is fine at preschool because she is very comfortable there. What does social adeptness have to do with reading? When she goes to kindergarten in two years I want her to adapt easily. By having a head start in academics she can focus on adapting to the social setting, instead of trying to handle both. I want her to succeed and this may be one way. It sure is fun for both of us!

  1. I used this book with my 6-year-old a couple of years ago. It worked well, and we both loved it!

  2. i think that's a love it or hate it book ~ we were not fans. But, nearly every lady in my homeschool group has taught their kids to read with it! Have fun!

  3. I have this book, and used it some with my now 7 year old when she was about 4 1/2, and she didn't like it very much. I thought I would try it with my now 4 year old son though, and see how it goes.

  4. Please continue to let us know how you like this book, I've heard conflicting reviews of it. But that shouldn't surprise me, what works great for some kids absolutely won't for others!

  5. Hi Sarah! Sorry but I accidently linked my post back to your blog the first time! You can delete my goof! The second link is fixed. I'll have to take a look at that book---it may be helpful to our homeschooling venture. Thanks! Have a great weekend!

  6. I used this book to teach my oldest to read when he was about 5. It worked well. My 5yo daughter has no interest in it though. :-(

  8. Sarah, isn't it interesting that some of the comments said the book worked well and some said it didn't work for others? Goes to show that we all learn differently and that we have different interests!

Sometimes we have to adapt a great idea or learning tool to fit our particular situation, just like you are doing.

I love your logic about the academic learning and social learning and wanting to teach your daughter what she can handle now to help her in the future. That is sooooooooo very awesome!!! You are a great mom. Don't let anyone stop you!

Have a great day and week.

  9. It is good to hear that the book doesn't work for some, so that when I try it with the littlest one I won't expect it to! My oldest couldn't have done this with me. She is way to independent - the book is so structured.
