I am to blame. I willing went to McDonald's. Mark was out of town for a game, we had a crazy day, and I wanted to treat the girls to Happy Meals. No excuses, this all could have been prevented but in a moment of weakness I tried to take the easy way out. I could fill a post with the ridiculousness of the messed up order and the two times we waited in the drive through line to fix it but that is not even the worst of it. Stay with me.
Trying to keep calm after my second time through the line I popped in the Kidz Bop CD that came with the meals. The first song is Photograph, happily sung by little voices. The original is sung by Nickelback which should be the first clue it may not be good for my 6 year old. So without further ado here are the lyrics to songs that they give out to their patrons 4 years of age and over (they do have toys for kids 3 and under if you choose)....
"Photograph"
Look at this photograph
Every time I do it makes me laugh
How did our eyes get so red
And what the hell is on Joey's head (they changed this to heck)
And this is where I grew up
I think the present owner fixed it up
I never knew we'd ever went without
The second floor is hard for sneaking out
And this is where I went to school
Most of the time had better things to do
Criminal record says I broke in twice (they changed criminal to school, not sure how that makes it better)
I must have done it half a dozen times
I wonder if it's too late
Should i go back and try to graduate
Life's better now than it was back then
If I was them I wouldn't let me in
Oh, oh, oh Oh, god, I
Every memory of looking out the back door
I had the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye.
Every memory of walking out the front door
I found the photo of the friend that I was looking for
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye.
Remember the old arcade
Blew every dollar that we ever made
The cops hated us hangin' out
They say somebody went and burned it down
We used to listen to the radio
And sing along with every song we know
We said someday we'd find out how it feels
To sing to more than just the steering wheel
Kim's the first girl I kissed
I was so nervous that I nearly missed
She's had a couple of kids since then
I haven't seen her since god knows when
Chorus and some other stuff...
The next song "Hanging On" starts out like this....
I've had a bad day
And nothing ever seems to go my way
I've got a heartache
Don't wanna think about it
And every time I try to smile, I cry,
so I'll just hide my face
Get out of my way
Don't wanna talk about it
Can we save the teen angst until they are actually teens?
I'm not a letter writing kind of person but I AM going to write a letter to McDonald's. What kind of people do they have choosing Happy Meal toys? Do other parents actually listen to this stuff before giving it to their kids? What is wrong with this picture? Me overreacting? I guess I just stash these CDs with the tattooed Barbies and thong wearing Bratz dolls. Seriously people, this is just wrong.

I guess they got much response about this promotion....
McDonald's Kidz Bop CD Pulled for Kid-Unfriendly Language

Unbelievable!
ReplyDeleteYeah, we're not going back to McDonald's until such time as the Kidz Bop CDs are gone. I don't want to encourage it. They just went in the trash. Chik-Fil-A however has some great toys right now aimed at getting kids outside: bug catchers, telescopes, so on and so forth. Those are worth going for.
ReplyDeleteThat's crazy! I will tell you that we have 3 others (all attained in one trip to McDonald's) that are not nearly as bad.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the warning. I've got two we haven't opened yet...their heading straight for the trash.
ReplyDeleteWrite the letter!!! You have to capture that frustration and do something with it....this was a great place to start! If we don't let major corps. know what we think and what we will tolerate our children receiving and listening to, they will continue to push the envelope at every opportunity. Great job sticking up for your children's rights to BE KIDS!
ReplyDeleteThat is crazy! And not OK...I think you should write the letter.
ReplyDeleteI gave you award over at my blog, please come by and see it.
ReplyDeleteyou've got to be kidding me! i actually got a happy meal the other day (for myself) and got that cd. i thought, "hmmm..i'll hang onto this so i have some fun kids music after the baby comes." thanks for this post...the cd is going into the trash...
ReplyDeleteI really can't believe this is such a big deal to someone who gives her kids Kong Balls, but I did find this for you to get upset about too. While you're typing, might as well type one up for BK - http://tinyurl.com/cmpr54.
ReplyDeleteFunny Chris. But I expect that kind of thing from BK. They have HORRIBLE commercials. I honestly don't go there because of them.
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable! Can you say our number one priority is vigilance? As parents, we must be involved and stay involved, we can not ever let up!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up Sarah, we all need to hear about these things to help us recognize all the things we need to be aware of. I would not have thought to listen to a CD that was made for young kids. I am soooooo old that it would not have crossed my mind that Satan is trying to get at them younger and younger!
Thanks again.
Shari
Crazy! The new kids bop also has that Pink song "So What" about Wanting to start a fight... The lyrics are barely changed and NOT appropriate for my 2 year old who lOVES kids bop on Yahoo! music kids. I can't believe that they would even consider that song!
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm devil's advocate...maybe I'm a horrible parent - my four year old daughter goes to sleep every night listening to a radio station that plays the real version of all of these songs, and we listen to it in the car too. Granted, sometimes we listen to Disney music, etc, but sometimes she just wants to listen to the radio. Of course, that is my choice as a parent, however. Perhaps McDonald's should have had a better selection of toys for their Happy Meals?
ReplyDeleteI also don't understand why people won't go to Burger King just because they have stupid commercials. I'm not trying to be sarcastic here...I just honestly don't care that much about what commercials say, and I don't buy products based on them.
I hope you did write the letter!!! Arg! Makes me so mad!! I just sent my first letter out to Quiznos recently for their nasty marketing choice (commercial)! This was a few months back and I haven't even received and acknowledgment. It's definitely not on our list of take out choices. I'll have to add McDonalds to the list.
ReplyDeleteSomeone has to speak up for our kids!
