Do You Remember?

It was another cold January day in South St. Paul, Minnesota. I was in sixth grade at Lincoln Elementary School. It was just after lunch when a friend and I were walking back to school after fulfilling our crossing guard duties for the departing morning Kindergarten students. A passing car stopped us and told us the news of the Challenger explosion and told us to run back to school to let them know. By the time we arrived the news had already spread. TVs were brought into our classrooms and we spent the afternoon watching footage over and over of the tragedy.

Do you remember where you were on January 28, 1986?

  1. I do remember - I had the TV on in the background while I was packing up my apartment in Oregon looking forward to moving back to Washington State when the news came on - needless to say I didn't get much packing done that day as I watched the news all day. It doesn't seem like it's been that long ago!

  2. I can't remember if I was in preschool or kindergarten, but I do remember coming home from school and seeing my mom crying on the couch while she watched the television.

  3. I remember too. It was an icy morning in Atlanta and I slipped and fell on our sidewalk. I went back inside crying telling my mom what happened. She said the bus slid off the road into a ditch, she called the school to tell them it was too dangerous for travel. We stayed home and watched the liftoff. I saw the whole thing. It was horrible and I still remember it. I was 11.

  5. I live in Hawaii, and was in elem school too and our class kept watching it over and over because of the astronaut from Hawaii (ellison onizuka) that was on the challenger.

    It was difficult to watch...
