My first grader and I had this conversation this morning.....
Me - "So what have you decided to be for Halloween this year?"
Bigs - "I'm still going to be a cheerleader."
Me - "Great. Remind me to get that from Auntie Roz."
Bigs - "Julie was going to be a cheerleader but she found a HOT bumble bee costume instead."
Me - "WHAT kind of bumble bee?"
Bigs - "Hot. You know, really pretty. Like a sexy bumble bee."
So I am now in the "Are you kidding me?" mode. Her friend is also 6 years old and apparently wants to not only be a bumble bee (which I'm fine with) but a smokin' hot sexified bumble bee. Did I mention she is 6?? So why is it that all of the costumes now are sexy? Doesn't it remind you of the Friends episode where Joey is figuring out a costume for Monica (The One w/the Halloween Party) but in a really yucky way because we are now talking about kids?
So when exactly did Halloween become sexy? Can we reverse the trend? Pleases, please let it be so. Anyone out there with older daughters? What is the forecast like? What else will I be telling my kids they can't do that everyone else can? I'm OK with being the villain....because Googling "bumble bee costume" has ruined me. Look at the progression.
Really? What on earth??
WOW!! I think I might faint if Ash came home and said she wanted to be a sexy anything!!! I'm haven't a hard enough time that she wants to be a cheerleader! Can Auntie Roz help me too?? ;)
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering the same thing =/
ReplyDeleteI don't have kids but I have the same beef with halloween costumes. Not only for young children, but for older girls as well. So many of my friends and classmates in university spend hours thinking about their halloween costumes for the year. But, the real purpose behind it, is to think about a way to dress up like a super skank and be able to get away with it because it's halloween. It's disgusting, in my opinion. I never thought the effects would trickle down to 6 year olds!!
ReplyDeleteWhere do kids get this stuff? I don't think my 5 1/2 year old would even know what "hot" meant if it wasn't temperature, nor "sexy". Is kindergarten going to corrupt him and by six he'll be a big man of the world?
ReplyDeleteYikes o yikes!
The past few halloweens I have wondered the same exact thing.
ReplyDeleteI was having this exact discussion with a friend of mine who has daughters. I am increasingly thankful for my son because there is no way a daughter of mine would be wearing stuff like that, "cool" thing to do or not.
ReplyDeleteI personally have the same problem with adult costumes. The parents dress up to do kids Halloween parties at school but I am not going dressed like the bottom picture. I make my own costumes now as a result but it would be nice to see some non0slutty costumes on the market
I know I saw some pretty wild costumes out there for little girls? I do not know why either.
ReplyDeleteUmmmm..... That's disturbing on so many levels. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteI know!! What the heck is that??
ReplyDeleteThe girls and I were just looking at costumes today while at Goodwill, and we saw one for a maid. Not just a maid, mind you, but a sexified French maid, complete with fishnet stockings, pink boa trim, ridiculously short skirt, and barely there top. It was made to fit 11-12 year olds. When I saw it, my first thought was, "You've GOT to be kidding me!!!" My girls saw it, and they said, "Oh, look! A pretty cleaner girl. Do you think that would fit me, Mama?" Um.....let me give that one a resounding No. Never. Nuh-uh. Not in a million!
ReplyDeleteThank you for vocalizing what I could not. I am 26 and really had a hard time finding a costume this year. They even have a sexy SpongeBob type thing for girls...sigh.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness that is INSANITY!
ReplyDeleteI so agree, I was looking for myself also and couldn't find a long skirted witch costume, its insanity!
